Ramos and Compean go to prison for doing their job

Ramos 11 years
Compean 12 years 1 day

They went to prison yesterday, despite efforts to keep them out until the appelate court rules, secure a pardon or otherwise commute the sentences. Meanwhile Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila, the man who drove the van loaded with over 700 pounds of pot across the border is sitting comfortably waiting for his chance to win millions in the civil case.

I've said it before but it has never been more apparent than it was yesterday. The notion of borders, of the American Nation State do not exist anymore. We can't even allow duly sworn law enforcement to stop the drug smugglers from coming into the country without the risk of jailtime. We need to decide if we really need a border patrol. Maybe instead of guns, we should issue them ink pads and hand stamps and station them in kiosks along the border with water fountains, bathrooms and balloons for the kids. If you can't beat 'em you might as well make them comfortable.
